What is Reflective Capacity?
Reflective capacity / functioning is the built-in brain mechanism that allows us to make sense of each other, in what we say and do; and it is what enables us to get along with each other.  As with the visual system, our reflective capacity is like the brain’s perceptual system for understanding our own mind and the minds of others.  It operates outside our conscious awareness and most of us have never even aware of it.

The ability to be reflective is essential for relating well to others, because it enables us to try to see the world from the other person’s perspective as well as our own and to accept that there is always more than one way to view a situation.

What is Reflective Parenting?
Reflective parenting refers to an understanding that everything the child does and says is motivated or triggered by something going on inside his/her mind, such as a feeling, an intention, or a belief, and that the same is true for the parent.  Everything a parent does or says is motivated or triggered by something going on inside his/her mind.

If the parent can take into account that his/her child is a separate person with his/her own individual viewpoint and motivations which can be different from an adult’s, such perspective-taking promotes greater empathy in a parent, enables a child to feel understood, and is the cornerstone of a child’s ability to develop their own mind.

Although the majority of parents have an adequate level of reflectivity, there are many circumstances that may impair a parent’s reflective capacity including experiences of deprivation, substantial level of stress, trauma, illness, etc.  Reflective Parenting Program (RPP) is especially helpful for parents with comprised reflectivity due to these factors.

Reflective Parenting Program (RPP) is an innovative and experiential 12-week workshop designed to enhance critical parenting skills, most notably the capacity to make meaning out of a child’s behavior.   RPP utilizes a reflective learning process, in a group setting, to help parents address everyday challenges with their child.

For RPP, there are 3 levels of training:

Level 1: Fundamentals is a 12-hour intensive training providing participants with a theoretical and experiential base of knowledge as well as clinical applications for working with the central issues in parent-child relationships.
Level 2: Facilitation provides a practical curriculum-based training in the facilitation of RPP.
Level 3: Supervision Training enables agencies to provide in-house Level 2 trainings.

In the current Level 1 Fundamentals, participants will learn a new and innovative approach to early intervention with parents based on a theoretical model of cognitive and emotional development emphasizing parental mentalization.  This essential processing mechanism enables parents to understand that mental activity such as thoughts, feelings, needs, intentions, and desires (within both their children and themselves), which are not directly observable, underlie all human behavior. The ability to understand and respond to children’s behavior in terms of the mental states that motivate it is essential for strong parent-child bonds (i.e. secure attachment).

This 12-hour intensive Level 1 training is designed for infant mental health and early childhood specialists.

The training provides participants with a base of knowledge, a new way to work with the central issues in parent-child relationships, and a step-by-step method that can be utilized to help parents think about their children in a more reflective way.  Parents are thereby supported to resist the temptation to seek quick or non-reflective behavioral solutions to the conflicts or problems they experience in relationship with their children.

Objectives of current Level 1 training:
The training is useful for professionals who provide care for children and adolescents to
  • Gain an understanding of attachment research and theory, psychoanalytic developmental theory, and the importance of the concept of parental reflective functioning
  • Use examples of specific attachment patterns to learn how to tailor effective interventions when working with parents
  • Explore practical application of parental mentalization theory in designing treatment strategies addressing a variety of issues that may emerge when conducting parent workshops or family therapy
  • Learn techniques and exercises that facilitate inquiry and reflection in parents

Program of Level 1 Fundamentals:
Level 1 covers the fundamentals of all the issues involved in RPP.
  • Session 1 & 2 - theory and research underlying RPP.
  • Session 3 & 4 - experiential and clinical elements of RPP.

The online training involves live lecture, discussion & videos.

Note: RPP Level 1 training is a prerequisite to Level 2 Facilitator Training. Participants in Level 2 co-facilitate a parent group with another Level 1 graduate while being supervised by a CRP Trainer. The RPP Curricula is made available during Level 2. Successful completion of RPP Level 2 is required to conduct RPP parent groups.  Details please refer to http://reflectivecommunities.org/professional-programs/rpp-trainings/?csspreview=true
